The Brentwood neighborhood belonging to Los Angeles is known as one of the wealthiest areas in the city with its mix of single-family homes and condos in quaint suburban and private forested valleys.
Historically, it was sold off in parcels after Mexico’s defeat in the Mexican War, along with the land grant including Santa Monica. Although a fire burned through Brentwood in 1961, destroying 484 homes and just recently another in 2019, the area has been flourishing ever since with development and large private estates in the canyons and flats.
Brentwood, historically called Westgate, is a neighborhood for those who likes being inconspicuous and enjoy a low-key luxe lifestyle. It is located on the Westside of Los Angeles, nestled between Santa Monica and Pacific Palisades to the west and south and Bel Air to the east. It is an area quietly driven through to reach the beach, so many miss it altogether which is how the residents prefer.
The exclusive area and original subdivision of Brentwood Park is characterized for its leafy expanse of large lots with palatial homes amongst gently curving streets. This is actually where Brentwood got its name. Meanwhile homes in Mandeville Canyon can take advantage of gorgeous canyon, city and ocean views. On the east side of Brentwood Park is Brentwood Heights.
There is a quaint shopping area on San Vicente Boulevard called the Brentwood Country Mart, fit with small cafes, restaurants, and even a petting zoo for the kids. Golfing enthusiasts who do not mind the pricy membership dues will love two of LA’s most exclusive country clubs, the Brentwood Country Club and Riviera Country Club.
There is a small business district in downtown Brentwood with a few high-rise office buildings, but for the most part Brentwood is a bedroom community and one of LA’s best kept secrets.
